Last night's program for the Oscars was interesting to say the least. I'm with everyone else, "Inception" should have been in the running for Direction and Best Picture. It was such a great movie. I'm glad it picked up the awards that it did. It picked up four awards in some technical categories.
I'm glad Natalie Portman won Best Actress in a Leading Role. I loved the "Black Swan" and I think she was amazing. I do feel bad for Amy Adams for losing to Melissa Leo, especially since they were nominated for their work in the same movie. Amy Adams was pegged from the beginning as the front runner for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. It must have been a huge let down when they did not announce her name.
All the hype surrounding "The King's Speech," has intrigued me so much. I really really want to see it. I love everything about the British Monarchy. I am a major history buff and this movie will definitely tickle my fancy. After all, it was approved by Queen Elizabeth II, herself. It's got to be a good movie. If the movie is as great as I've been hearing, congratulations to Colin Firth for a job well done. I will definitely weigh in once I finally see the movie.
Congratulations to Christian Bale for winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role. My brother told me that he was great in "The Fighter." That's another movie I definitely need to see. Being from Massachusetts, I have a lot of pride in the Bay State and it's capital city, Boston. When it comes to movies set in Boston, I don't know how I feel. It's annoying when people try to speak with a Boston accent. Some people do it well, while others fail all around.
Ben Affleck annoys me when he is in movies that are set in Boston. For a Bay Stater, he sucks at speaking with a Boston accent. Don't get me wrong, not every Bay Stater has a Boston accent, considering Boston is not the only city or town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. However, he was raised in Cambridge. He should be able to nail a Boston accent.
I'm glad "Toy Story 3" picked up Best Animated Picture among other awards. Disney is always on point. I don't know how they do it. I will always love Disney as long as I live. "Toy Story 3" was a great movie and I'm glad Disney/Pixar closed the triology the way they did. It was perfect. This is going to sound odd but it really spoke to me, given where I am in my life. It was about moving on and starting a new chapter of your life. Sure, things are not going to be the same but everything will be fine; just as great as, if not better than, before. I didn't cry but it was definitely a tear jerker.
I enjoyed the program last night. I think the Academy definitely appealed to a younger demographic. The Oscars are always so stiff and formal. It was nice to have the rejuvenating comedy stylings of Anne Hathaway and James Franco. I think, as awkward as they were at times, James and Anne were great co-hosts. I thought the little skit in the beginning was funny. I think it made the show more lively.
However, there were not a lot of positive reviews about last night's program. I saw on the news this morning that a lot of people thought Anne and James' hosting was too much, annoying, and not suited for the Oscars. I couldn't disagree more. It was just what the Oscars needed. I definitely enjoyed the Oscars much more this year compared to past years. Some people were even hating on the 5th graders from PS22 in Staten Island, New York who sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to close out the show. How could you hate on musical 5th graders? That's like beating up a kid in a wheelchair. It's like stealing an old lady's purse. It's like telling your little brother or sister that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and all that other crap is...well...crap! How rude! Those kids were amazing!
I think the Academy needs to come down off their high horse and join the rest of the award shows in developing a program that will draw in viewers and higher ratings. You've got to get with the times or else you'll end up like the Miss America pageant: old news, uninteresting, and out-of-date. Yes, I still like the Miss America pageant but there's a reason it got pulled from the major networks' primetime schedules. I'm just saying.
Until next time, be classic and traditional all you want but get with the times.
Sincerely,
J.A.B.
